The US welcomes a rising Costa Rica

With sensitive casualties in both attacks, the United States will seek to resume the path of victory this Wednesday against a rising Costa Rica at the close of the triple October date of the octagonal final of Concacaf towards the World Cup in Qatar-2022.

Both teams arrive on different trajectories to the clash at Lower.com Field in Columbus (Ohio, United States).

On the fifth day of the octagonal, the United States gave Mexico the leadership of the group on Sunday by leaving their unbeaten in Panama (1-0).

The young American team is now second with eight points, ahead of Panama on goal difference, while Costa Rica jumped to fifth place with six points thanks to its first victory, against El Salvador (2-1).

The Costa Rican national team would close October in one of the three places that give a direct ticket to the World Cup if it is capable of delivering the first defeat for the United States in its territory.

Although he is credited with his recent triumphs in the Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup, the US coach, Gregg Berhalter, came under intense criticism for his approach in Panama.

The coach, who cannot count on offensive figures Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) and Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund) due to injury, made seven changes compared to the eleven that had beaten Jamaica (2-0).

Against Costa Rica, Berhalter is expected to recover key players such as full-back Sergiño Dest (FC Barcelona), midfielder Weston McKennie (Juventus) and Mexican-American striker Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas), who had been emerging at 18 with three goals in the previous two games.

On Wednesday Costa Rica will not have forwards Joel Campbell, due to a sprained ankle, and José Guillermo Ortiz, who tested positive for covid-19.

Suárez called two old acquaintances from the national team to replace them, Christian Bolaños and Álvaro Saborío, 37 and 39 years old respectively.
