Thiem beats Medvedev in Barcelona final

Dominic Thiem beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 to win the Barcelona Open.

The fifth-seeded Austrian had a quiet encounter to claim his second trophy of the year. The month before, he had been crowned in Indian Wells.

Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final and Rafael Nadal in the Barcelona semi-finals. Only one other player has beaten Spaniard Nadal four times on clay, Novak Djokovic.

“It means a lot to me and it is an honor to win here,” Thiem stressed. “It is a special tournament. Only great players win here. Rafa has won it 11 times ”.

It was Thiem’s first clay court final since last year’s French Open. In that duel he succumbed to Nadal.

Likewise, Thiem had lost to the Spaniard in the final in Barcelona two years ago.

Medvedev, the 14th seed, had just appeared in the Monte Carlo semifinals. He was contesting his first final on brick dust.

The 23-year-old Russian started well, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set. He never fought again, as Thiem managed breaks that gave him control of a duel that lasted just over an hour.

Thiem did not lose a single set during this edition of the contest in Barcelona. It was the 13th career title for the 25-year-old Austrian and his ninth clay-court coronation. AP
