Thousands of Romanians welcome Simona Halep, champion at Wimbledon

More than 30,000 people cheered the Romanian Simona Halep, winner of the Wimbledon tennis tournament against the American Serena Williams, in a ceremony held in the largest stadium in Bucharest.

“I want to share this trophy with you, it belongs to all of us and the whole country,” the 27-year-old tennis player launched, while fans chanted her name at the National Arena.

“Let’s enjoy it and hope that these magical nights will be repeated,” added the tennis player, who won her second Grand Slam tournament last Saturday, defeating Serena Williams by a clear 6-2 and 6-2 in the final, in just 55 minutes of game. “A dream come true”, according to the Romanian.

In 2018, the tennis player from Constanta, a town on the shores of the Black Sea, won Roland Garros.

“I hope this trophy inspires as many children as possible to play sports,” said Halep, who was convinced that “anything is possible if you have confidence in yourself.”

The player also thanked the two former glories of Romanian tennis Ilie Nastase, “who made us love this sport,” and Ion Tiriac, “who gave me very tough advice.” Both were next to the winner of Wimbledon.

Simona Halep, a professional since 2008 and who finished the last two seasons as number 1 on the women’s circuit, will be decorated in the coming days by the Romanian Head of State Klaus Iohannis. AFP
