Tico will contest IBF title as Mayweather-McGregor prelude to fight

The Costa Rican Francisco Fonseca will dispute the 130-pound title of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) with the American Gervonta Davis, in the fight prior to that of Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor, agreed for August 26 in Las Vegas.

This was reported this Thursday by the manager Mario Vega and the Costa Rican boxer himself, the IBF intercontinental champion and who will expose his undefeated professional face against the also unbeaten Davis.

I’ve been preparing for this opportunity all my life. Although he came out relatively recently, I have been ready to fight, I have the right weight and I know every detail of Gervonta, “Fonseca, who is training in Puerto Rico, said in a statement.

The boxer acknowledged that the fight “will not be easy” and that he takes “as a gift from God” the opportunity to aspire to a world title and also be present on the undercard of the so-called “fight of the century” between Mayweather and McGregor.

Fonseca has a record 19 fights won, 13 of them by KO, and a draw, while Davis, who is known as a Mayweather protégé, has 18 wins, 17 of which have been fast track.

According to the Costa Rican Mario Vega, the fight had been negotiating for a few days, but until this Thursday an agreement was reached.

Davis had to face fellow American Tevin Farmer, but suffered a physical problem that left him unable to fulfill the fight.

This is how the organizers of the evening offered the opportunity to the Costa Rican Fonseca, who decided to accept even though he will have just two weeks to prepare for the fight.

“We have worked in silence but with great dedication, we know Fonseca’s talent and that is why we wanted to be very cautious until opportunities arise,” Vega said. EFE
