Todt and Ecclestone propose to cancel the new qualifying session format

Jean Todt, president of the FIA, and Bernie Ecclestone, representative of the owners of the rights of the Formula One World Championship, have proposed to the Commission of this championship and to the World Council of the federation the cancellation of the format of the qualifying session released this year.
Both have agreed to this after “accepting the unanimous request of the World Cup teams in a letter received this Thursday.”
Todt and Ecclestone’s proposal, if approved by both the F1 Commission and the FIA World Council, will take effect until the end of the season at the next round, the Chinese Grand Prix, which takes place this week. coming in Shanghai.
The new qualifying format, which has already been used in the first two races of the season (Australia and Bahrain), has received harsh criticism from teams and drivers. At first Todt and Ecclestone were against to recover the old formula.
Formula One teams have finally agreed to ask the FIA to return to the 2015 formula.
The controversial new system establishes the successive elimination of the slowest cars during the three rounds (Q1, Q2 and Q3).
Thus, in the first two races, Q1 lasts 16 minutes. From the seventh minute the slowest car is eliminated, and every minute and a half the last ones are discarded until fifteen drivers are selected.
Q2 lasts a quarter of an hour and the eliminations start from the sixth minute. From there, every 90 seconds the slowest car falls until the eight that take part in the 14-minute Q3 are selected.
In the latter, at five minutes the eliminations begin every 90 seconds until there are two drivers left.
The new format induced most of the drivers, including the two Ferraris, not to contest the pole position in Melbourne at the end of Q3, the last part of the qualifying session, considering that they had no options, in order to save tires for the race.
