Tour de France winner’s trophy stolen

The 2018 Tour de France winner’s trophy won by Britain’s Geraint Thomas was stolen from a cycling salon exhibition in Birmingham in late September, his team Sky announced.

Sky had loaned its bicycle supplier Piranello, for display, the trophies of the three grand tours won by Thomas (Tour de France) and his partner and compatriot Christopher Froome (Tour of Spain and Giro d’Italia) between September 2017 and July 2018.

“It’s heartbreaking what happened,” Thomas declared. “The trophy has a limited value for the one who has stolen it, but it is great for me and the team,” he added.

«Whoever has taken it will be kind enough to return it. A trophy is important, but obviously, what counts most are the magnificent memories of this incredible summer, and that no one will ever be able to take it away, “he added.

The theft, according to Sky, occurred at the end of the room when the trophy had already been packed. Police are investigating the case, the team said.

“Sorry,” said Piranello UK CEO Richard Hemington. “We hold ourselves fully responsible and have made our excuses to Geraint,” he added. AFP
