US President Donald Trump said today that he is considering granting a posthumous pardon to the champion of boxing heavyweight Jack Johnson, who died in 1946, after actor Sylvester Stallone explained the story of the ill-fated fighter.

Johnson, the world’s first African-American boxer, was convicted in 1913 by an all-white jury in Chicago, Illinois, for violating the Jim Crow-era White Slave Trafficking Act, which It was intended to prevent and punish human trafficking.
The fighter fled the country to Europe and then to Argentina, but finally returned to the US in 1921 to settle the bill with the Justice and served a nine-month sentence, after which he continued boxing.
Activists and family members have long advocated for Johnson’s posthumous pardon, as has Republican Senator John McCain, a 2008 presidential candidate for the Republican Party. EFE
