UEFA opens the application period to organize Euro 2028

UEFA has announced that its member associations interested in hosting UEFA EURO 2028 have until March 2022 to declare their interest, with the appointment of the host (s) taking place in September 2023.

EURO 2028 will feature 24 teams and 51 matches will be played, just like the two previous tournaments. Joint nominations are allowed, provided the candidate countries are geographically compact.

Those interested must contribute 10 stadiums, with the following capacities:

• Minimum 1 stadium with at least a capacity of 60,000 seats

• Minimum 1 stadium, preferably 2, with at least a capacity of 50,000 seats

• Minimum 4 stadiums with at least a capacity of 40,000 seats

• Minimum 3 stadiums with at least a capacity of 30,000 seats

The key dates will be the following:

• March 23, 2022 – Deadline for national federations to confirm their interest in submitting a bid.

• March 30, 2022 – The bid requirements are made available to bidders.

• April 5, 2022 – Announcement of bidders by UEFA.

• April 12, 2023 – Deadline for submission of the final application file.

• September 2023 – Appointment of the UEFA EURO 2028 venue (s).

To ensure compatibility with the sporting and commercial format of the competition, automatic qualification of the host team (s) will only be guaranteed for a single host or a maximum of two joint host federations, as has always been done in the past.

In the event that there are more than two joint host associations, automatic qualification of all host teams cannot be guaranteed and will be subject to a decision to be taken in conjunction with the decisions regarding the qualification competition. EFE
