Ukrainian Lomachenko is favorite in defense of his title

Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko, who has become one of boxing’s most explosive talents in just eight professional bouts, will defend his belt from the World Boxing Organization (WBA) super feathers this Saturday against American Jason Sosa.
A double Olympic gold medalist, Lomachenko has become one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world with a 7-1 professional record.
He won the WBO featherweight world title in 2014 – in just his third professional fight – and achieved the super featherweight belt with a knockout victory over Puerto Rican Román Martínez on June 11 of last year.
In November, he dismantled Jamaican Nicholas Walters, whose corner threw in the towel after seven rounds of a lopsided bout.
Lomachenko’s speed, skill and power have made top featherweight fighters reluctant to face him, according to his Top Rank promoters.
Top Rank president Bob Arum, who promoted greats like Muhammad Ali, says he has never seen a fighter with Lomachenko’s ability.
Sosa, a native of New Jersey, received the call after Mexico’s Orlando Salido rejected a rematch with Lomachenko, as he was the only one who gave him the defeat that tarnishes his record.
Panamanian Jezreel Corrales, holder of the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt, also chose not to run into Lomachenko before the Ukrainian faced Sosa, who brings to the fight a 20-1 record with four draws and 15 knockouts. .
“I have to be ready to face one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world that I have ever seen,” said Sosa, 29, a former WBA champion.
“At the end of the day, my team and I have to be prepared. We want to fight the best. Lomachenko is the best in our division at the moment, “added Sosa.
Lomachenko is the top seed in a fight that will mark the first card at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, in the suburbs of Washington DC.
“For me, it’s historic because other big names opened Madison Square Garden, other hotels and other casinos,” Lomachenko said at the final pre-fight press conference.
Lomanchenko ended by saying that “this for me means that I can put that in my story.”
