United Arab Emirates to host Club World Cup in early 2022

The United Arab Emirates will host the next edition of the Club World Cup in early 2022, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Wednesday.

The tournament should have been played in December 2021 in Japan, which resigned in September to be the venue due to the international health situation.

It will be the second time in a row that this competition, which is traditionally played in December with the champions of the different confederations and the league champion of the local country, is played outside of its usual dates due to changes in the calendar due to the pandemic of the covid-19. The 2020 edition was moved to February 2021 and was played in Qatar, with the title for Bayern Munich.

“The Club World Cup (2021) will be played in early 2022. There are no precise dates, but the host will be the United Arab Emirates,” Infantino told a press conference after a FIFA Council meeting.

The tournament is expected to take place in February at the earliest, since the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) is played in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6.

English Chelsea, current European champions, will theoretically be the rival to beat.

The representative of Conmebol will be Brazilian, since Palmeiras and Flamengo will play the final of the Copa Libertadores. In the case of Concacaf, Mexico will once again be represented, since the square for that confederation will be for Monterrey or America.
