United States defeats Costa Rica and rises in the tie

The United States defeated Costa Rica 2-1 on Wednesday on the sixth date of the Concacaf octagonal heading to the Qatar-2022 World Cup with goals from Sergiño Dest and young forward Tim Weah.

The son of ex-footballer George Weah, current president of Liberia, scored the American winning goal in the 66th minute at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio.

Previously, Keysher Fuller put Costa Rica ahead in minute 2 and Sergiño Dest, FC Barcelona winger, equalized for the locals in minute 25.

With this victory, the United States adds 11 points and provisionally ties Mexico at the head of the group, while Costa Rica remains with six units and continues to move away from the first three positions that give direct ticket to Qatar-2022.

The American victory gave a break to coach Gregg Berhalter, questioned for leaving his main figures on the bench in last day’s defeat in Panama, the first for the team in the group.

«The team stayed together. I am very happy with the performance after receiving the goal in the first minute, ”said United States captain Tyler Adams.

For Costa Rica, whose leader Keylor Navas was replaced at halftime, it means a new setback after they signed their first octagonal win against El Salvador on Sunday.

The pupils of Colombian Luis Fernando Suárez left the Columbus Crew stadium silent when they took the lead with less than two minutes of play.

An erratic exit from the area by goalkeeper Zach Steffen ended with a cross by Ronald Matarrita from the left that was volleyed into the net by Keysher Fuller.

The target was a jug of cold water for the young North American squad, which has played the triple date of October without its two offensive figures, Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) and Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund).

Coach Gregg Berhalter sent the lines forward and the speedy Yunus Musah and Brenden Aaronson began to burst into Keylor Navas’ area.

The equalizer came in the 25th minute with an arrival from the right of Musah, who yielded to Dest at the peak of the area.

The side of FC Barcelona cut inwards and threw a spectacular left-footed shot to the opposing squad.

The draw still seemed to satisfy Costa Rica, who claimed a penalty at 37 for a fall in the box by Jonathan Moya.

– Navas replaced –

Keylor Navas, the Paris Saint Germain goalkeeper, stayed on the bench at half-time due to physical discomfort.

The Costa Rican squad had their best chance in the 56th when Bryan Ruiz intercepted a Miles Robinson pass in midfield. The veteran midfielder started the solo career but, after being hit by Robinson himself, lost the ball while trying to cut to the bore of the area.

The United States squeezed for all three points and drew oil from a Keysher Fuller defensive fumble.

The ball reached Sergiño Dest on the right, who assisted to uncheck Weah behind the rear.

The young Lille forward launched a powerful shot at the near post that came in dramatically after bouncing off the post and the back of Navas’s replacement Leonel Moreira.

Weah, 21, had replaced Paul Arriola, injured in the warm-up, in the starting lineup.

With the losses of Joel Campbell and José Guillermo Ortiz, Costa Rica did not manage to jeopardize the triumph of the United States, which was able to expand the account on several occasions. AFP (HN)
