Valeri Karpin appointed new Russian coach

Russian Valeri Karpin, current Rostov coach, will take over the reins of the Russian team, replacing Stanislav Cherchesov, dismissed due to the team’s poor performance in the European Championship.

«The contract with Karpin will be valid until December 31, 2021, with the possibility of being extended. Over the next six months, the coach will combine work at the national team and at the club, “the Russian Football Union (UFR) announced this Friday in a statement posted on its website.

The note adds that the hiring of Karpin, former coach of Mallorca and Spartak, will be formalized on July 26.

“He was one of the best Russian players of his generation, he stood out for his play in clubs and in the national team. After finishing his playing career, Valeri Gueorguievich gained extensive experience as a coach, including the last years of his successful work at Rostov, ”the statement added.

For his part, Karpin thanked the UFR for the trust, which, he said, is a “great honor” and a “great appreciation of his work” as a coach.

“For me, this is a new, very important and very interesting stage in my career as a coach,” he said.

The 52-year-old Karpin’s mission will be to qualify his country for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, whose qualifying phase will resume in September and where Russia is framed with Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta.

“We will make every effort to achieve that goal,” he promised. EFE (HN)
