Venus Williams takes revenge on Muguruza

The Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza was eliminated today in the group stage of the Masters after losing to the American Venus Williams, who thus claimed revenge from the last Wimbledon final and will seek to lift the title for the second time in her career.

The eldest of the Williams sisters beat Muguruza 7-5, 6-4 in the last match of the White Group to advance to the semifinals alongside Czech Karolina Pliskova.

“What can I say, I played against a great rival,” said the American. “I am so happy that I was able to win the last point,” he added.

On the other hand, a Pliskova already classified lost today against the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko by 6-3 and 6-1. Despite the fall, the Czech will advance as first in the group thanks to her victories over Williams and Muguruza.

“Today was my last game here,” said Ostapenko. “I really tried to enjoy every moment. I think I played very relaxed, and just showed my best tennis.

Muguruza, meanwhile, closed his participation in the Masters with a victory and two defeats. She beat Roland Garros champion Ostapenko on her debut, but then fell consecutively to Pliskova and Williams.

The one born in Caracas, second in the ranking at the beginning of the week, will thus not be able to snatch the number one in the world from the Romanian Simona Halep.

“I think she played very well in important moments, and I made some mistakes that I shouldn’t have made,” said the Spaniard.
