Verlander needs surgery

Justin Verlander, the ace of the Houston Astros, will have Tommy John surgery and will miss even much of the 2021 season, frustrating his plans to return for the playoffs.

The latest American League Cy Young trophy winner announced the news Saturday on his Instagram account in a minute-and-a-half video.

“A couple of days ago, in my simulated game, I felt something in my elbow, and after looking at my MRI and talking with some of the best doctors in the world, we have determined that Tommy John surgery is my best option.” Verlander said.

The 37-year-old right-hander pitched games against batters Wednesday for the first time since he was injured in the season opener on July 24. He threw 50 pitches in the bullpen before hitting 25 sluggers in a pair of simulated innings.

“I tried my best to go back and play this season,” emphasized Verlander. “Unfortunately, my body did not cooperate.”

Houston manager Dusty Baker was confident that Verlander would return. However, he was also fearful of the situation.

“I spoke to him this morning,” Baker said. «He is not crazy with happiness for the results, but this is how it is. You have to take care of this. He has pitched for years, he is a warrior and a leader. Hopefully this prolongs his career and that he can pitch again. I’ve always told him he’s a medical marvel and a great physical specimen. “

The pitcher has been on the disabled list for a strained right forearm. In mid-March he underwent a groin operation, and would have missed the opening game had it not been for the campaign being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Verlander has a contract with the Astros until 2021. General manager James Click said it was too early to talk about 2022, as everyone is now focused on surgery and the rehab process.

“First of all, you can’t replace Justin Verlander,” Click added. «No one person can replace him. This is going to require an effort from the entire team. (GG) (Taken from MLB.COM).
