Vettel needs to show his face in Singapore to stop Hamilton

The German Sebastian Vettel and his Ferrari need to show their face in the Singapore Grand Prix that will take place at the weekend, after the blow that comes from the British Lewis Hamilton with his Mercedes thanks to his triumph at Monza and the assault to the top of the Formula 1 championship.

In sweltering Singapore, Vettel is forced to curb the trend brought by motorsport’s premier class after the European summer break, with Hamilton’s victories at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza.

Those 50 points added by the three-time world champion placed him in the leadership of the World Cup for the first time this season, a situation that Vettel is forced to reverse to continue with hopes of fighting for the title.

«Here we are to run races. If it’s difficult, that’s fine. When it’s easy, it’s boring, ”said the German, who led the tournament from the first race, but is now three points behind the Briton.

Vettel hopes he will benefit from the record in Singapore, where he won four of the nine Grand Prix races. A win would make him the true dominator of the circuit, allow him to curb Hamilton’s winning inertia and return him to the top of the championship.

However, Mercedes will not be the only obstacle in the German’s path. The Red Bulls have already shown signs of adapting well to the Marina Bay street track, where Australian Daniel Ricciardo was second for the past two seasons. “I don’t think Singapore is our only chance to win a race in the second half of the season, but it is the best,” Ricciardo acknowledged.

With Red Bull as a factor and with Ferrari under pressure, Mercedes hopes to get through Sunday’s night race in the best way possible. Toto Wolff, Head of sports motor racing, already anticipated a “damage limitation” exercise for one of the most demanding races on the calendar, due to the heat and humidity of Singapore.
