Mexican Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), confirmed that Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto must face undefeated Kazakh Gennady Golovkin in a mandatory fight.
The Kazakh nicknamed “GGG” beat Englishman Martin Murray by technical knockout in the eleventh round last Saturday, defending the WBC interim middleweight belt, in addition to his World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight championship. Cotto is the absolute champion of the division since last June 7 dethroning Argentine Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez by technical knockout in the tenth round, so Gennady is the official challenger.
However, the Puerto Rican has a voluntary defense at the door. The champion can face whoever he wants, and after that commitment if he comes out the winner he must go against Golovkin.
The Puerto Rican’s rivals are the American Timothy Bradley or the Cuban Erislandy Lara, in a fight that would be in June and the venue to be confirmed.
