Wolfsburg beats Salzburg and adds excitement to Group G

The German Wolfsburg continues in the fight to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League after winning 2-1 at their stadium against Austrian Salzburg, leaders of group G, on the fourth day of the maximum continental competition.

The Teutonic team achieved their first victory and added five points, two less than their rival tonight, waiting for what Seville will do, which receives Lille, the French champion, in the Andalusian capital.

Salzburg had not lost a match in official competition since last April 21.

The confrontation started with great intensity on the part of the Austrians, with a failed first head-to-head match at the hands of 19-year-old German striker Karim Adeyemi, his club’s top scorer in this competition with three goals.

But a shot from German midfielder Ridle Baku to the far post put the hosts ahead in the 3rd minute of play.

The Austrians were undaunted and took possession. At the half of the game, they tied with a goal from Maximilian Wober after a free kick. He hit it with a thread and the ball took a curve impossible to stop by the Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

With the second half already started, Salzburg could take advantage on the scoreboard after Adeyemi failed the second hand-in-hand that the German international forgave.

However, a shot to the squad by Lukas Nmecha raised the winning goal to the scoreboard in the 60th minute.

In the event of victory, Salzburg would have mathematically qualified for the knockout rounds, which they could win the following day if they beat Lille, while Wolfsburg will then travel to Seville. AFP (HN)
