Argentine Juan Martín Del Potro withdrew from the Miami Open with a right knee injury that does not give him respite and that has put his career under threat.
Through his twitter account, the “Torre de Tandil” announced: “Unfortunately I will not be able to play the Miami Open this year due to my knee injury. I hope to see you next year. “
Del Potro, eighth in the world rankings, suffered a vertical kneecap fracture last October during the Shanghai Masters. Only reappeared in February to play in the tournament in Delray Beach, Florida, but did not exceed the quarterfinals and then dropped from the Mexican Open in Acapulco and from Indian Wells, the first masters of the season, where he defended the title.
Two days ago his press officer had also published on social networks that Del Potro, 30, “continues to demand his knee, with tennis and physical training, to see how he responds, and thus decide his next steps.”
After the announcement of his absence in Miami, speculation grew about a possible knee surgery, something that Del Potro wanted to avoid because it would require a longer recovery time.
It is not the first time that an injury has put Del Potro’s career in doubt. After becoming champion of the United States Open in 2009, the nightmare of wrist problems began, first on the right and then on the left, which was operated on three times. AP
